Yesterday, Fanhouse messed it up. It misquoted Dwyane Wade. Fanhouse thought he said, “If we lose a couple in a row this season, it will be like the World Trade (Center) is coming down again. When the schedule comes out, people will be looking for the Lakers and Heat, to see when they play us.”
But there were other media members around when Wade gave that quote, and clearly, that’s not what he said. Here’s what he really said:
“We’re going to be wearing a bullseye. But that’s what you play for,” Wade said. “We enjoy the bullseye. Plus, there’s going to be times when we lose 2-3 games in a row, and it seems like the world has crashed down. You all (media) are going to make it seem like the World Trade is coming down again, but it’s not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games.
We’re all in agreement that any reference to sports and 9/11 in the same sentence is a poor one. Right? Ok. Let’s just move on.* Fanhouse profusely apologized. Today, Wade apologized.
* Was living across the river in NJ on 9/11, just in case you think some basement-dwelling blogger in middle America wrote this. On that horrible day, I could walk 200 feet from my studio apartment and see the smoke.
