Florida Gators: Briefly, this news brought joy to us yesterday. “Florida is internally investigating what sources described as an allegation that a representative of an agent paid Pouncey $100,000 between the Gators’ loss to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game and their season-ending Sugar Bowl victory over Cincinnati.” But as the story unfolded last night, it started to become clear that the allegations probably wouldn’t stick: “Pouncey’s alleged violation of his amateur status was made public only after he accepted cash from one agent but then signed with another agent. Pouncey’s current agent is Joel Segal, who also represents former UF star Percy Harvin, the NFL’s 2009 Rookie of the Year. According to the same source, a Lakeland-based ‘runner’ was used in the transaction between Pouncey and the jilted sports agent.” Still, in the wake of Reggie Bush, North Carolina and South Carolina, look for more of these player-agent connection stories in the future.
