2010 Fantasy Football Rankings: Tight Ends

What was once a throwaway position on par with kickers, tight ends have become a reliable source of scoring for fantasy football teams. Between 2000 and 2003 a total of 10 tight ends eclipsed 100 points in a single season.

Last year alone, there were 10 such guys. More significantly, someone not named Gonzalez or Gates has now led the position in fantasy scoring in two out of the last three seasons (Vernon Davis in 2009; Jason Witten in 2007) after four strait before that. While both guys are still top tier performers, there are plenty of other  options available that can be had at a much better value. Despite the rankings below, which surprisingly puts Dallas Clark at #1, Gates will almost certainly be the consensus top tight end taken in drafts. If you’re willing to wait out the initial Tight End run that always occurs too early in drafts, there are lots of potential sleepers lying in the pool of low-tiered TE1s.

Previously: 2010 QBs, 2010 RBs, 2010 WRs.

TE 1

Top Tier

1. Dallas Clark – 1.69
Low Pick: FF Today (4th)

2. Antonio Gates - 1.77
Low Pick: 4th (Sports Illustrated)

Vincent Jackson took a lot of yards and TDs from Gates’ offensive production last year. With him out of the picture for at least part of the season, his bloated value might actually be worthy of its rank this year.

2nd Tier

3. Vernon Davis - 3.54
High: 2nd (Fantasy Football Maniax and Fantasy Sharks); Low: 6th (Fantasy FanPlay)

In only limited action with Alex Smith, who took over the starting job in Week 7, Davis scored 10TDs in the final 11 games. Imagine what a full offseason of reps between the two will do.

3rd Tier

4. Jason Witten - 4.92
High: 2nd (SI); Low: 8th (Sharks)

5. Jermichael Finley – 5.31
High: 2nd (FF Today); Low: 8th (SI and Dave Richard)

6. Tony Gonzalez – 6
High: 4th (Yahoo!/Fantasy Guru); Low: 8th (Walter Football)

7. Brent Celek – 6
High: 4th (Richard, ESPN, NFL.com); Low: 12th (KFFL)

4th Tier

8. Kellen Winslow – 9.38
High: 4th (KFFL and Sharks); Low: 14th (Fantasy Fan Play)

9. Owen Daniels – 9.69
High: 7th (Richard); Low: 16th (FF Today)

10. Zach Miller – 10.31
High: 12th (5 sites); Low: 7th (Walter Football)

11. Visanthe Shiancoe – 10.54
High: 7th (Maniax); Low: 21st (FF Toolbox)

12. Chris Cooley – 11.08
High: 8th (Jaime Eisenberg and FF Toolbox); Low: 18th (SI)

Bench

13. John Carlson – 13
14. Heath Miller – 14.38
15. Greg Olsen – 15.15
16. Dustin Keller – 16.38
17. Kevin Boss – 17.31
18. Jeremy Shockey – 18.23
19. Tony Scheffler - 22
20. Bo Scaife - 22.08
21. Todd Heap – 22.15
22. Benjamin Watson – 22.2
23. Fred Davis – 23.5
24. Jermaine Gresham – 23.31
