The Dave Wannstedt Era at Pitt is Becoming Progressively Pathetic and Embarrassing
By Ty Duffy
Dave Wannstedt has players. He recruits well. He has graduated kids. This is it, Pitt. He’s no longer building. This is the Dave Wannstedt era. It’s not improving. It’s a disappointment. Pittsburgh plays in the Big East. They have an easy schedule. They should be candidates for a BCS bowl bid every season. Ten wins should not be an accomplishment. It should be the minimum expected. Pitt is the most underachieving program in college football and the reason is coaching.
Wannstedt claims the offense was inefficient. “Ineffective” would have been more accurate. Eight of the first nine drives failed to obtain a first down. They had a missed field goal and two interceptions. It took nearly three quarters to move inside the Miami 30-yard-line. The one sustained drive of the game came after the competition was over. Pittsburgh had extenuating personnel issues, but the futility went beyond that. The only thing less imaginative than Pitt’s game plan was Pitt hiring Wannstedt initially.
If the losing and tactile disappointment was not enough, four of his players have been arrested in the past two months. Getting “Pretty Damn Mad” did not have the desired effect.
Dave Wannstedt is flailing. He’s a hopelessly drunken dad who threw away the assembly instructions. It’s time for Pitt to take away his tools. Unfortunately, they can’t fire him, mere months after agreeing to a contract extension.
