Week 14 NFL Power Rankings

  1. New England Patriots (10-2). Someone finally made a statement that they were the best team.  The offense just rolled the Jets. Brady has moved to the front of the MVP talk.
  2. Atlanta Falcons (10-2). Another clutch performance for Atlanta pretty much assures a top seed.
  3. Green Bay Packers (8-4). Greg Jennings has been killing some teams lately.
  4. Philadelphia Eagles (8-4). That offense is so diverse in how it can attack teams at all levels with the passing game.
  5. Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3). That was one great game on Sunday night.
  6. New Orleans Saints (9-3). This week’s game against St. Louis could be a playoff preview.  The depressing part is that no matter how much the Saints win by, the next one will be in St. Louis.
  7. Baltimore Ravens (8-4). The announcers talking about Joe Flacco were apparently watching a different game than me.
  8. Chicago Bears (9-3). Bears move up a bit, not because they played well, but because they didn’t completely collapse like others.  Play New England well and the Bears will move up more.
  9. New York Giants (8-4). Eli has become the less interception prone Manning.
  10. New York Jets (9-3). The fact that the last loss that large was in 1986 (Jets lost last 5 regular season games after 10-1 start) isn’t exactly going to stop Jets’ fan paranoia.
  11. Kansas City Chiefs (8-4). Ugly win for Kansas City, who completely squandered multiple opportunities.
  12. Jacksonville Jaguars (7-5). I’m starting to actually think this team is going to be losing a first round playoff game.  They’ve played reasonably competent football for about a month straight now.
  13. San Diego Chargers (6-6). The Chargers could go from everyone’s pick for second half surge, to completely out of the playoffs in the span of a week, if they lose at home to the Chiefs.
  14. Indianapolis Colts (6-6). Peyton Manning has now thrown touchdown passes to eleven different players this season.
  15. Miami Dolphins (6-6). If you would have told me a QB was going to throw some gut-punch interceptions in that Miami-Cleveland game, I would have put large sums on it being Delhomme over Henne.
  16. Oakland Raiders (6-6). I’m not sure there is a team that has put as many impressive games, and whatever the exact opposite of impressive games, together in the same season.  They are exactly average on the year, but never know what you are going to get from week to week.
  17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-5). I’m afraid that blown 10 point lead against the Falcons is going to eliminate the Bucs from playoff contention.
  18. Cleveland Browns (5-7). With games against Baltimore and Pittsburgh left at home, this team will have a say in playoff races.
  19. Houston Texans (5-7). C’mon, Bob McNair, fire Gary Kubiak and go on a 4-game winning streak.  All the cool owners are doing it.
  20. Minnesota Vikings (5-7). Did anyone mention how much fun Tarvaris Jackson was having out there while scoring 38 points despite 3 interceptions?
  21. Dallas Cowboys (4-8). Don’t confuse change in luck with Jason Garrett making optimal coaching decisions.  He reminds me of Dick Jauron.
  22. St. Louis Rams (6-6). Least sucky team in the West.
  23. Tennessee Titans (5-7). Why is Jeff Fisher talked about as one of the best coaches in the league?  His teams have made playoffs
  24. Washington Redskins (5-7). Mike Shanahan has won a division the lowest percentage of times among all coaches with at least five plus seasons.  (3 division titles in 17 years).
  25. Seattle Seahawks (6-6). It’s really hard to win games in the NFL, well, unless you get Carolina at home.
  26. San Francisco 49ers (4-8). Mike Singletary is a master of halftime adjustments.
  27. Buffalo Bills (2-10). My son, when I explained that teams get to pick the players: “why does the Buffalo guy keep picking bad ones?”
  28. Denver Broncos (3-9). The Broncos should start Tebow now so they will have a better draft pick for the new regime.
  29. Detroit Lions (2-10). Drew Stanton has scarred my retina with his Dougie rendition.
  30. Cincinnati Bengals (2-10). This team can grasp defeat from the jaws of victory with the best of them.
  31. Arizona Cardinals (3-9). Look for the “John Skelton is the next Tony Romo” article from Peter King on Friday.
  32. Carolina Panthers (1-11). If this was the BCS, Atlanta’s ranking would be getting ready to plummet by having to play the Panthers twice.
