Buster Olney (ESPN) vs. Jon Heyman (SI): As the battle over Cliff Lee reaches its denouement – 6 years? 7 years? Mystery team? – keep an eye on two of the highest-profile MLB writers, who are on the precipice of a squabble. Scoop-happy Jon Heyman of SI wrote about a “mystery team” last night that could beat out the Rangers and Yankees for Lee. Instantly, speculation was that there is no mystery team, and Lee’s agent Darek Braunecker planted it with Lee in hopes of driving up the price. (In return, would Braunecker then leak the biggest free agent decision to Heyman? Not a bad trade-off.) Then, Buster Olney tweeted that sentiment. It’s Olney’s second skirmish on twitter this year – recall his tete-a-tete with colleague Keith Law in August.
