Gus Malzahn: Perhaps the most coveted offensive coordinator in college football isn’t going anywhere. Gus Malzahn is staying at Auburn for $1.3 million a year, a ridiculous sum of money to pay an offensive coordinator. Hope he gives a hefty cut to Cam Newton. While we’re on the topic of Newton … his Dad definitely could have gotten way more money than the alleged $180k. In one season, Newton made the careers of head coach Gene Chizik and to a lesser extent, Malzahn (who was already an up-and-comer who you may recall was coaching high school football about five years ago, but then went to Arkansas in a package deal). Malzahn was making $500k and now he’ll be the first or second highest paid assistant coach in the country, and making more than head coaches Rick Neuheisel (UCLA), Mike Riley (Oregon St), Kyle Whittingham (Utah) among others.
