Rex Ryan Finds Wife Sexy, Has Foot Fetish, Makes Video. Where is the Story?

This incident has no pathos. It’s part of the “Days of Reckoning,” but for what sins are they being judged? It’s not objectionable to find your middle-aged wife sexy. A foot fetish might not be everyone’s finest glass of wine, but there’s nothing obscene or offensive about it. There’s nothing sinister about tame exhibitionism.

It has no logos. There is no legal issue. There are no divorce proceedings. There are no ramifications from this beyond embarrassment for his family.  There’s no great hypocrisy being exposed.  There’s no enduring lesson, except to shoot your fetish videos from the neck down.

What is the newsworthy angle? His wife is barely a public figure.  We are hysterical prudes censuring a married couple for not limiting themselves to missionary position with the lights off. It’s senseless sensationalism. It’s not news.  There’s no value, beyond the glee of embarrassing someone because you have the power to do so.

I can understand why Deadspin would publish this and why the tabloids would blow it up. What I don’t understand is the rest of the media feeling compelled to react to it and push the story. Why are legitimate news reporters hounding him with questions about it a press conference? There is neither public good nor a pressing thirst for knowledge being served.
