The Seattle Seahawks are Terrible . . . Yet Are Playing for a Playoff Spot

Not as bad, maybe, as the memorable Tampa Bay Buccaneers of 1976, a team that gave us many John McKay quotes – “I’m all in favor of it” in response to a question about his team’s execution stands out – and very few points (8.9 per game) and an 0-14 record.

Then there were the 1981 Baltimore Colts, the team that set a record for futility in sacks, and gave up over 33 points a game. Those Colts beat the Patriots twice, in the season opener and in the finale, and otherwise lost 14 straight games, and were so poorly run by that point that John Elway refused to play for them a year later.

After that, you have the 2008 St. Louis Rams (2-14), the 1990 New England Patriots (1-15) with Rod Rust, The Lou Holtz’ New York Jets of 1976 (3-11), in Namath’s final year with the team,  the 1972 New England Patriots (3-11), and the 1949 Green Bay Packers (2-10). Oh, and this year’s Seattle Seahawks.

With their ninth loss yesterday in Tampa Bay, the Seattle Seahawks remained perfect, with each of their losses coming by more than 14 points. That makes them the ninth team since 1940 to lose nine or more games by more than two touchdowns in a single season. With another blowout loss at home to St. Louis next Sunday, they would tie those hapless Dallas Texans, Baltimore Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers teams for most blowout losses in a season. Or, they can win and make the playoffs.
