Conference: West Coast (24-9)
Location: Spokane, Washington
Famous Alum: John Stockton played basketball for Gonzaga, while Bing Crosby was also an alumni. Check out the video of the porn star crying at the bottom of this post.
They’re Back!
For the 13th straight season, Gonzaga will be in the tournament. Last year, they beat Florida State in a 8/9 matchup, before losing to #1 seed Syracuse. Their best result was in 1999, when Gonzaga reached the Elite 8 before losing to national champion Connecticut.
School’s Leading Scorer: Frank Burgess (2,196 points), who went on to become a U.S. District Court Judge.
Resume: Gonzaga played a tough non-conference schedule, with wins over Marquette, Baylor and Xavier and losses to San Diego State, Illinois, Notre Dame, Kansas State, and Memphis.
Like Father, like Son: John Stockton’s son, David Stockton, is a freshman on the team and has solidified the team’s guard play late in the season. This team has a strong frontline, with seven-footer Robert Sacre, NBA prospect Elias Harris, Sam Dower, and swingman Steven Gray. If they get good guard play in the tournament, they will be dangerous.
All-Important Rankings: 62 (RPI), 32 (Pomeroy), 44 (Sagarin)
Projected Seed: Once the dust settles from some of the at-larges losing in their conference tourneys, I think they settle in as a #10 or #11.
Twitter: @GonzagaBulldogs is the official twitter site of the Athletic Department. Sean Farnham (@seanfarnham), college basketball analyst for ESPN covering the WCC and other West Coast teams, is a frequent tweeter during games, occasionally even ones he is announcing at breaks, and will probably have some insights during the Gonzaga game next week.
