Dwight Howard Won't Sign an Extension Before July 1

The NBA’s best center said all the right things about wanting to stay in Orlando earlier in the week. Then a TV report emerged that Howard would be signing an extension with the Magic. Instead of just shouting, ‘ERRONEOUS!’ and waving his hands like Vince Vaughn, Howard said this:

“The biggest thing right now is everybody understands I have one more year left. I’m keeping my options open, but there’s no other place I’d rather be than Orlando. I want them to understand that.”

As difficult as it’ll be for Magic fans to stomach, this has to be the move from Howard. Wait to see what happens with the CBA/lockout. Wait to see what plans Otis Smith has in store for that Orlando roster. Howard can’t re-sign in Orlando right now with the team built the way it is, or his career could quickly wind up on the Patrick Ewing fast-track – great player, great career, but no titles.
