Onion Bag: USA Plays Friendly vs. Spain

USA plays Spain in a friendly at 4:30 at Foxborough (a lot of friendlies within driving distance of Bristol…). The Americans are gearing up for an epic Gold Cup campaign. The Spanish are wondering why they aren’t on a beach. There’s some element of revenge, since the U.S. eliminated Spain from the Confederations Cup. Though, I’m sure winning the World Cup has soothed the pain.

Neither side will take this too competitively. The U.S. is sitting Donovan. Spain is fielding more or less a B squad, with Santi Cazorla, Albiol and Negredo getting starts.

Sid Lowe has discovered the two things that can beat Spain heading into Euro 2012: fatigue and themselves. Players are denying rumors of rifts within the squad, stemming from the heated quartet of matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

For news involving players who could have played for the U.S., Giuseppe Rossi is now the focal point of the Italian squad and may be heading to Barcelona this summer.
