Rory McIlroy Just Set a 54-Hole Record at the US Open

A slew of golfers are in the running for second place, led by Y.E. Yang (-6), Lee Westwod (-5), Jason Day (-5) and Robert Garrigus (-5), but McIlroy is the only story at the sleepy Open this year.

McIlroy who has had a lead in each of the last four majors, has never won one. He’s tied for 3rd three times (PGA Championship 2009, Open 2010, PGA Championship 2010).

Since McIlroy gagged on a 4-shot lead on the final day at Augusta in April, this stat is worth noting: The biggest final-day comeback in US Open history belongs to Arnold Palmer, who overcame a 7-shot deficit to win in 1960. Every writer covering the Open will go with one of two storylines: 1) McIlroy chokes, again; 2) McIlroy overcomes his choke at the Masters, wins his first major.

I’m guessing ratings will be poor, unless Rory shoots in the neighborhood of 45 on the front nine Sunday.

An interesting footnote, but perhaps only to me: Tiger Woods has not tweeted during the Open. Ten months ago, McIlroy said nobody was afraid of Tiger.

Put me down for McIlroy winning the Open by six strokes.
