Fans of the Cubbies must be heartbroken today as their three-and-a-half-year romance with Kosuke Fukudome is now over. He’s off to Cleveland where the Indians will get his services for close to free while the Cubs pay the remainder of his salary. The official numbers, via Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, go as follows: Chicago will pick up roughly $3.9MM while the Indians throw in the tip, which equates to $775,000. According to Jim Bowden, the Cubs will get minor leaguers Abner Abreu and Carlton Smith in return.
In order for the deal to go through, Fukudome had to waive his limited no-trade clause that included the Indians as one of 15 teams he had no desire to play for. He will unfittingly wear No. 1.
The best part of the trade was learning Fukudome will pull down $13.5 million this season. Hysterical.
