Last night in top of the ninth inning at Citi Field, Florida’s Greg Dobbs ripped a foul ball up the first baseline and ended up hitting a young boy directly in the face. Amazingly, the youngster is said to be doing well and miraculously did not break his nose or orbital bones. Here’s Justin Turner: “I heard his mom screaming, looked back and blood was squirting out of his forehead.” That’s just not the kind of quote you normally hear after a baseball game. Brutal. Every time Gary Sheffield violently swung and tattooed a foul ball up the third baseline, I was always amazed something like this never happened. The Mets ended up winning the game 2-1 thanks mostly to Dickey’s impressive curve.

Cubs 7, Giants 0 — One word for this one: Wow. Randy Wells pitched a complete game two-hitter. The two fearless Giants who managed to get base hits? Mike Fontenot and Andres Torres. The defending champs are now five games back of first place with as much hope of catching the Diamondbacks as Terrence Cody has of one day ridding his chest of pancake tits. What a debacle.

D-Backs 5, Rockies 1 — The Diamondbacks have won seven straight, making the reality of a division title increasingly apparent. Daniel Hudson was tremendous and Justin Upton walked twice and stole a base. Even when he doesn’t hit, he makes a difference. Hero? Hero.

White Sox 3, Twins 0 — Mark Buehrle kept the disastrous Twins scoreless for 7 2-3 innings and by not playing, Adam Dunn somehow improved his WAR to -16.8. Sox are only five back which is proof of just how long the baseball season is. Unbelievable.

Royals 9. Tigers 5 — Charitable starter Max Scherzer allowed 7 runs on 10 hits including 3 home runs. All of that happened in three innings. Detroit has lost two in a row. They lead the Central by five games and if they have any interest in winning it, they should probably tell Max to go roller skating in lieu of making his next start.

Dodgers 4, Padres 1 — Clayton Kershaw pitched a complete game and has given up just two runs in his last 31 innings. In a season that’s been the equivalent of a horse manure milkshake, Kershaw has quietly been tremendous.

Indians 2, A’s 1 — Brandon McCarthy pitched eight innings of two-run ball and struck out 10. It’s a shame the A’s are terrible.

Astros 7, Pirates 4 — The Astros played the Pirates.
