Yardwork: MLB Denies Mets' Tribute, and There's Panic in Boston

“If we got a vote in, I think we’d want to wear the hats, but at the end of the day Major League Baseball makes that call, and we’re going to respect that.”

That’s nice, and perhaps it was the proper call given the circumstances, but it sure as hell would have been interesting had the Mets gone ahead with the plan and dared MLB to fine them for doing such a ghastly thing as honoring the fallen.

Rays 9, Red Sox 1 — Tampa Bay swept Boston and have won 7 of 10 and sit an incredibly out-of-nowhere 3.5 games back of the wildcard. The reeling Red Sox have lost 8 of 10 and David Ortiz says, yes, it’s time to panic: “Hell, yeah, you’ve got to panic. If we keep on playing like that, we’ll be home in the tub.” Not only is Big Papi refreshingly straightforward, he paints a lovely picture as well. It’s hard to imagine the Red Sox actually blowing this, but here we are and boy would it be humorous.

Tigers 2, Twins 1 — The Tigers have won nine straight games. The last time they did such a thing they won the World Series. On top of that, even the freaking Lions won yesterday. Dare I say all is right in Detroit? No. I don’t.

Yankees 6, Angels 5 — Freddy Garcia went five innings and gave up five runs, including two homers. Naturally, he won. Things have had a tendency to work out for Freddy in 2011. Still, the idea of him starting a postseason game is harrowing.

Cards 6, Braves 3 — The Cards are only six games back of the Brewers. With three weeks left, the time is now, especially since Albert Pujols will be playing for the Cubs next year.

You probably saw this 157 times this weekend but this home run pretty much never gets old for me:
