On the banks of the Red Cedar, there’s a school that’s known to all, and on Oct. 15 they will take the field looking absolutely ridiculous in Nike’s new Pro-Combat uniforms. Green and White are Michigan State’s “only colors” yet the uniform features black pants, a gold helmet and accents and not an ounce of white anywhere. Supposed to channel the ancient Spartans, it looks more fitting for Baylor, Colorado State or Wayne State. Stop snickering, tOSU fans.
This uniform craze has lost touch with reality. No greater evidence than Nike seeing nothing insensitive about outfitting Army and Navy, kids preparing to risk their lives in actual combat, for metaphorical warfare in their matte, post-apocalyptic fantasy world. You want to glorify combat? Here’s combat. That’s what happens to both “the hammers” and “the nails.”
