“This is really unfair to us,” said Piedmont High senior, Antonia Bavilacqua, 17, who is leading the vocal charge to change the principal’s mind. The skirts are still OK for games, just not during school. “We’re just sad and hurt. It’s our school colors and spirit. And they’re making us feel like outcasts.”

The high school has been enforcing their dress code more strictly this year, yanking students out of class whose skirts don’t at least reach mid-thigh. Do they at least look good Principal Williams?

“Pockets are hanging out,” Williams said of the offending skirts found during the sweeps. “Cheeks are hanging out. We don’t want them bending over.”

The cheerleaders’ argument is that it’s hot out, it ban hurts school spirit and – most importantly – they totes look dorky and stuff in sweatpants. A valid argument, but I’m going to have to side with the administrators on this one. Cheerleaders shouldn’t get special treatment. Besides, it’s not like their wearing their outfits to school does anything besides gives some of the boys something to be distracted by. Cheerleaders have no affect on actual games. School spirit will remain at its current level no matter what a 17-year-old is wearing while she isn’t paying attention in class.
