On March 30, a whopping 45 staffers/writers/talking heads offered up MLB predictions for the season. Every single one of them had the Red Sox making the postseason.
(Confession: I had the Red Sox going to the postseason, too. If you can find anyone who didn’t have them playing October baseball, let me know. It is worth noting nobody from SI had the Yankees going to the World Series.)
As Cork Gaines notes, of the 45 ESPNers who picked the Red Sox to make the postseason, 33 of them picked Boston to win the World Series.
I know the Mets had a pretty historic September collapse in 2007, but when you factor in the Boston additions last winter (Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford), if the Red Sox manage to miss the postseason, this would definitely have to be the worst September gag job in MLB history.
