2011 NLDS: Chris Carpenter, Cliff Lee, and the Awful St. Louis Bullpen

The St. Louis Cardinals held a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning of Game 1 last night until Kyle Lohse was greeted by a 3-run homer off the bat of Ryan Howard that pretty much everyone saw coming, except for possibly Tony La Russa. Quickly following Howard’s moonshot was a Raul Ibanez 2-run homer that sent Citizens Bank Park into a seizure. With the way Roy Halladay settled down after the first inning, you could almost sense a Cardinals meltdown was on the way, it was just a matter of when.

But did La Russa have much of a choice? His bullpen has been a burning tire dipped in dog shit all season long. Proving that notion in impressive fashion were Marc Rzepczynski and the immortal Mitchell Boggs, who combined for 1.2 innings of failing, allowing seven hits and five runs. An unmitigated disaster to say the least. There’s a better chance of Roy Halladay admitting he’s one of the Klopek sons than there is of this series going beyond three games.

Tonight’s starters are Chris Carpenter and one of the funnest pitchers to watch, Cliff Lee; so there’s that.
