Chael Sonnen is the first man to ever complete create his own legend. Last night, he added to that legend with a dominating victory and one of the all-time greatest postfight interviews in UFC history. After being asked about his performance in his submission victory over Brian Stann, Sonnon only had this to say:
This prompted Anderson Silva’s screen-capped reaction. Silva seems to alternate between amused and annoyed by Sonnen’s schtick. Dana White says Silva hates Sonnen, but it seems like he’s kind of amazed at this crazy white dude. The last time these two met, Chael Sonnen backed up his insane trash talk for four rounds before Anderson Silva caught him in the 5th. So now we get another four months or hoopla and fuzzy facts from Sonnen while the champ prepares with a strange smirk on his face.
The fight should be a lock to headline the Super Bowl weekend card and Sonnen’s star should continue to rise between now and then. The first fight was a classic. Since then? Silva has returned to his spectacular roots with two show-stopping knockouts of Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami. Is it possible that Sonnen issued Silva a wake-up call after The Spider had spent the previous couple years mostly toying around in title fights? As for Sonnen, his work last night showed a still-dangerous fighter with the same brutal ground and pound skills that nearly won him the first fight.
So yeah, I can’t wait for the fight or the talk that sells it. I’ve said before that Sonnen amuses me. When you put a microphone in front of his face, he’ll work whatever crowd he has like a seasoned standup comedian. His material is excellent and his delivery has been perfected. Whatever happens in Silva-Sonnen II, we’re in for a great show.
