Jamell Fleming, OK CB, Named FWAA National Defensive Player Of The Week

Fleming, a 5-11, 191-pound senior from Arlington, Texas, had a career high 13 tackles in Oklahoma’s decisive 55-17 victory over rival Texas in Dallas.

He also returned a fumble 56 yards for a touchdown and forced a fumble. The touchdown was one of three defensive touchdowns scored by the Sooners. Eleven of Fleming’s tackles were unassisted and two went for three yards in losses.

Other defensive players who had outstanding games this past weekend include:

* North Carolina LB Zach Brown, who had a game-high 11 tackles and recorded his first interception of the season in Carolina’s 14-7 win over Louisville.

* Penn State S Drew Astorino, who had 11 tackles in a 13-3 win over Iowa.

* S Jamoris Slaughter of Notre Dame, who moved to OLB for the game, had an interception and was an impact player during a 59-33 pounding of Air Force.

* DT Brett Roy of Nevada, who set a career-high with 11 tackles, including four for a loss (one sack), in a 37-0 win against UNLV.

Fleming will be added to the 2011 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. Five finalists for the Nagurski Trophy will be announced on Nov. 17.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be presented to the best defensive player in college football on Dec. 12 by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
