Sportscenter's Elway versus Tebow 1st 8 games Comparison is Asinine

Let’s go through some of them.

  • Elway was a true rookie, starting in week 1 just over 2 months after his 23rd birthday. Three of Tebow’s starts came at the end of a rookie year, and the other five halfway through the second season.
  • QB Win/Losses is a dumb stat. fin.
  • Different eras–any time you quote a “Player X” has a better passer rating than “Player Y from 30 years ago”, feel free to then proceed to slap yourself.
  • Elway hurt his elbow in the season opener his rookie year, and it affected him while he tried to play through it. Steve DeBerg came off the bench in the opener, and the two split time over the next 4 games, with Elway throwing 75 passes and DeBerg 62. Elway was nominally the starter in each of those games though they were splitting reps.
  • Elway was benched and came back a month later after DeBerg got hurt, and after his elbow had recovered more. His 8th start, the equivalent to Tebow’s last night: 16 of 24 for 284, 2 TD’s and 1 int.

So, anyway, this quick blurb probably led Elway to look a little grump after the Tebow touchdown last night. What are they trying to say on Sportscenter? Whatever it is, it needs more “Who’s Now” on the subtitle.
