EA Sports is rebooting the property online and has selected three NFL players to battle for the first online cover.

The nominees are Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White, Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis.

Voting will take place online during the VGAs, which air on Spike TV (8 PM EST) on Dec. 10. EA Sports and Spike are directing viewers to the official Web site to log in and then vote. Prior to the conclusion of the show, the winner will be unveiled by former Niners teammates and Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.

NFL Blitz is a download-only release, scheduled to launch on Xbox Live and PSN in January.

EA Sports this year also enabled fans to select the cover for its Madden NFL 12 cover (in which Peyton Hillis beat out Michael Vick).

According to Cam Weber, EA Sports’ GM for American Football, “NFL Blitz was one of the great arcade classics of the ’90s, and now we’re bringing back everything fans loved at a great price, in high-definition and as a digital download. The new NFL Blitz will preserve the competitive nature of the original game, while delivering to fans the ultimate rivalry experiences online.”

NFL Blitz features include 7-on-7 teams, 30 yards for a first down and high-intensity options in which players can fly and “players randomly bursting into flames,” according to EA Sports.
