From the Sports Illustrated article, Herring has struggled with paranoid schizophrenia for almost thirty years, often failing to medicate (malt liquor being his medication of choice) and refusing to cooperate with treatment. According to the story by Thomas Lake:

"Pop was a nightmare tenant: slamming doors in the middle of the night, dropping bricks on the bathroom floor, filling trash cans with water, stuffing potatoes in the garbage disposal, turning on the gas stove for no reason, leaving food to burn and cigarettes to smolder. Landlords and fellow tenants revolted. Pop found himself homeless."

That’s when Pop ended up at his current residence, an old home “whose decrepit condition made it nearly impervious to the ravages of Pop.” It is likely this location described by Lake where Pop Herring has now been arrested and the body found. It was a sad story to begin with, and now it just got sadder.
