We’re only in mid-January but the Detroit Tigers have already been hit with some terrible news regarding the upcoming season after learning designated hitter Victor Martinez will likely miss all of 2012 due to a torn ACL in his left knee. The injury was suffered during an off-season workout that took place some time last week.
Since there’s obviously no immediate answer to replace Martinez, a No. 5 hitter with the second best OPS on the team, GM Dave Dombrowski can expect to get about 10 minutes of sleep for the next month and would be wise to simply affix his cell phone to his ear — yes, that would still look better than a Bluetooth — until a viable option is found. And he better hurry because the Yankees are rumored to be in the midst of reunion talks with Hideki Matsui, fork in back and all.
