Lawrence Tynes hit the 31-yard game winning field goal in overtime. Kyle Williams made people forget Billy Cundiff’s shank from earlier in the day. Eli Manning threw the ball a lot (franchise-record 58 attempts) and two dominant defensive lines controlled the NFC Championship game.
The teams combined for 9 sacks. The game-changing plays both took place on punts as 49ers’ return man Kyle Williams – replacing injured Ted Ginn – had one ball go off his knee and was then stripped in overtime to set up the deciding field goal.
Alex Smith and company struggled to move the ball (0-for-13 on third down), except for two touchdown passes to Vernon Davis (one went 73 yards).
