Murray State had been flirting with losses in conference play for the last few weeks, with four of its last six games being relatively close contests. Tonight, it finally caught up with them, as the Racers were upset at home by Tennessee State. The Racers lost despite the heroics of star player Isaiah Canaan, who had 31 of their 68 points and hit 7 three pointers.
Murray State squandered late chances to save the undefeated season. Trailing by one, the Racers threw away an inbounds pass. But Tennessee State clanged two free throws. Then, Canaan turned the ball over and was called for a foul. Down three with:03 left, they threw the ball out of bounds on a length of court attempt, and Tennessee State hit one more free throw to end perfection.
Here’s a disaster scenario for Murray State – a loss at home to St. Mary’s next weekend and then losing in the conference tournament. In that scenario, they’d be sweating out Selection Sunday.
