Amanda Beard Struggled with Bulimia and Self-Mutilation During Her Olympic Medal-Winning Swimming Career

Amanda Beard was just 14-years-old when she won a gold medal in Atlanta at the 1996 Summer Olympics. She has appeared in four Olympics and won seven medals for the United States. She has appeared in Playboy and the SI Swimsuit Issue. She also struggled with depression, bulimia and self-mutilation. From USA Today:

During her teens and 20′s the clinically depressed Beard became bulimic (an eating disorder characterized by binge eating, then purging), abused drugs and alcohol and began cutting herself with a razor.

Beard reveals one of her cutting stories in a very uncomfortable excerpt from her upcoming book, In the Water They Can’t See You Cry. Beard hopes to appear in her 5th Olympic games this summer in London.
