Is Anyone Surprised Baylor's Scott Drew Was Making Impermissible Phone Calls and Sending Text Messages?

Remember, this is the same guy who created a position for John Wall’s AAU coach in an effort to get Wall to Waco. (He’s not the first to try something like that; it failed.) It looks like Drew will escape anything serious despite the “illegal” calls/texts, and the assistant coaches are the ones here who will suffer the most. According to ESPN’s Jason King:

"Combined, the men’s and women’s basketball programs sent 738 impermissible text messages and made 528 impermissible calls over a span of nearly two-and-a-half years. The probe also determined that former men’s assistant Mark Morefield committed a major violation when he attempted to influence two AAU coaches to furnish the NCAA with false and misleading information regarding a series of text messages. Morefield resigned in July 2011. The report concluded that Drew demonstrated a “failure to monitor” the activities of two of his assistant coaches and that there was also an overall “failure to monitor” by the institution, which found 405 additional impermissible calls and text messages from nine different sports, ranging from football to the equestrian program, from January-July 2011, during its investigation."

The worst kept secret in the Big 12 for the last three years has been how shady Scott Drew is. Coaches have privately been slamming Drew for a few years now. That happens when you take a dormant Baylor program from zero to two Elite 8s in three years. He’s got a solid squad coming back (Elite 8 potential if Quincy Miller stays; still a tourney team if he leaves) and expect the rumblings to continue.

Problem is, so far, Drew has done a good job dodging serious punishment. Maybe he’ll lose a scholarship or be told he can’t recruit during a certain period. Big deal. Teflon Scott? [ESPN]
