Britney Griner, the most dominant player in women’s college basketball in a while, and a player who would have undoubtedly been a notable figure for the Women’s Olympic Basketball team, will not play in the London Olympics. According to this Washington Post article, Griner would have been the first collegiate player to play on the Olympic squad since 1988.
Griner has cited a family illness and her summer school schedule as reasons for not participating. The U.S. Women will still be prohibitive favorites at the London Olympics, as they have won gold medal at the last four events.
