The giveaway at last nights Royals-Yankees game was a “George Brett Mini Pine Tar Bat,” honoring the infamous “Pine Tar Game” at Yankee Stadium back in 1983. Excellent idea, and what a unique freebie, especially when often times you’ll get a free team hat with a giant Citibank logo draped across the back, or some kind of commemorative plastic pin. Compounding that excellence is the sense of humor exhibited by both the Royals and George Brett, although the incident was 29 years ago.
Will this creative giveaway mark the start of a new trend among teams? Will we be gifted with “Bloody Sock Day” in Boston? “Disturbingly Stained Hat Day” in the Bronx to honor David Wells? Perhaps a handy “Joe Torre Nose Picker” at Dodger Stadium? I sure as hell hope so.
