Dmitri Young was into baseball cards. The former Red, Tiger and National invested around $5 million of his $52.8 million career earnings in his baseball card collection. He had “perhaps the best collection of rookie cards in the world.” Now, he’s auctioning all 497 of them to set up his charitable foundation.
Proceeds from the auction will help Young start The Dmitri D. Young Foundation, which will work with kids with baseball and softball camps and support of the Boys and Girls Club, among other ventures.
Young’s collection includes:
The only 1955 Robert Clemente Topps rookie card ever graded 10 gem mint by PSA (value: $250,000-plus); one of only two 1954 Hank Aaron Topps rookie cards graded 10 gem mint by PSA (value: $250,000-plus); the only 1963 Pete Rose Topps rookie card ever graded 10 gem mint by PSA (value: $75,000-plus); and the only 1969 Reggie Jackson Topps rookie card ever graded 10 gem mint by PSA (value: $30,000-plus)
According to the Detroit News, he’s sober. He has also lost so much weight he’s virtually unrecognizable. The only tell-tale signs are his flame tattoos on his arms.
Not often we get to write feel-good stories. Glad to see Da Meat Hook is doing well.
