Shyam Das has been the arbitrator for MLB disputes between ownership and labor since 1999, but MLB has informed Das and the player’s union of its decision to terminate Das under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.
Das most prominently ruled in favor of Ryan Braun in regard to the drug suspension. The lesson here: while the arbitrator is independent, if you make decisions that MLB doesn’t like, you are gone. Don’t feel bad for Das, though. He also works for the NFL as an arbitrator and is scheduled to hear appeals of the Saints’ bounty suspensions.
