May 26th, 2002: The Lakers are down 2-1 to the Kings. LA was blown out in game three (at home!) and after one quarter, the Kings rang up a 40-20 lead in game four. We’re boozing in a budget hotel room in Dewey Beach, Delaware, and I’m distraught – this was when I was a big Lakers’ fan – and boozing heavily (either Coors Dog Silver or Beast Light – hey, we were just out of college). The Lakers make a dent in the lead, but the 2nd quarter is still ugly, and we leave the room for a bar. I figure the game’s over.

On the way to the bar – I believe it was North Beach – we see some friends from high school and chat with them awhile, and then we crush some wings at the famous Wings to Go. The game was the furthest thing from my mind, and this wasn’t the era of cell phones with the internet. I’m 98 percent sure I was not even texting at the time.

So we finally roll up to the bar and I see a frenzied crowd of 10-12 people huddled around a TV. I sprint over just in time to see the Lakers coming out of the huddle, down two, needing a bucket to send the game to OT or a triple to win it.

I can still hear the roar when Horry’s three-point went down. Bedlam. Lots of high-fiving random people. Without question one of the best buzzer-beating shots I’ve seen.
