The Greek God of Walks will be walking out of Fenway Park soon if the report from Danny Knobler is true. The 33 year old Youkilis spent three weeks on the disabled list with lower back soreness earlier, and had the spat with manager Bobby Valentine after Valentine publicly questioned Youkilis. How much of this is a baseball decision because of Youkilis’ age and the presence of Will Middlebrooks at third base, along with no spot at first or DH, and how much of it is because of that conflict? Probably both, with the former making it palatable and the latter making it more likely.
Youkilis is entering a dangerous age as a long term option, and just had the concerning back injury. He can also still provide a quality hitting option for 2012 for teams needing a first baseman, third baseman, or DH in the American League when healthy.
