Voula Papachristou was expelled from the Greek Olympic team earlier this week over a racist tweet. Papachristou has not taken her country’s swift decision well as should be expected. From the Guardian:
“I have not slept at all and to be honest I am still trying to come to terms with what has happened. I am trying to stay calm otherwise I would lose control. I am thankful to my coach and family and so many other people who have stuck by me.
“After so many years of hurt and sacrifices to try and get to my first Olympics I am very bitter and upset. But what has upset me the most is the excessive reaction and speed of the disciplinary decision.”
All this over a tweet. This is why the Olympics are so great and yet, so awful. Once every four years. This is just like the time that Reebok spent months hyping up Dan versus Dave and then Dan missed the freaking Olympics. Except with Twitter. And a hot blonde from Greece. Never mind. This is nothing like that. Hopefully, social media will be gone by 2016 and she’ll be able to represent her country.
