Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals in eight days at the 2008 Olympics, didn’t even place in his first chance at the London Olympics. In the 400 M Individual Medley, Phelps finished a disappointing 4th place, while his friend Ryan Lochte cruised to victory and the gold. Phelps was in second at the halfway point, but could not make a push, while Lochte challenged Phelps’ World Record time until the final 25 meters.
NBC, which was giddy with glee over the ratings for Friday’s Opening Ceremonies, made the unwise decision to “save” the race for prime time Saturday night, instead of showing it live.
Spoiler: It wasn’t close.
