In doing so, McIlroy won his second major at an age five months younger than Tiger Woods did, as both won the PGA Championship at age 23. Of course, Woods really turned it on the next year, when he won four consecutive majors starting with his dominating performance at Pebble Beach. We’ll see if this is McIlroy’s Pebble Beach moment, launching a run of being the clear best player in the game. Of course, he won the U.S. Open by 8 strokes last year, and then went five majors with no result better than 25th, before lapping the field again this week. The stretch of majors with different winners comes to an emphatic end at sixteen, though. I have a feeling we won’t go so long over the next two years.
