Not surprisingly, Cabrera was having the best year of his career, hitting .346 and leading the National League in runs and hits.

[UPDATE: Cabrera, who was possibly in line for a big free agent payday, has admitted he cheated. “My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used … I am deeply sorry for my mistake.” Cabrera will sit out the final 45 games of the regular season, then the first five games of the postseason, and then be eligible to play, assuming San Francisco hasn’t been eliminated.]

[UPDATE: Tyler Kepner reports Cabrera was one at-bat shy of qualifying for the NL batting title. He’s currently 2nd to Andrew McCutchen, and ahead of Joey Votto. UPDATE: Kepner now says under a quirky rule, Cabrera can take an 0-for-1 and still win the batting title. Apparently you can take 0-fors until you meet the minimum requirement. Come on McCutchen, go into a funk so we can all laugh at Cabrera winning the batting crown!]
