America's Best Junior Tennis Player, Taylor Townsend, is Battling the USTA - Over Her Weight

Taylor Townsend, 16, is the best junior tennis player in the world. Townsend, from Chicago, is the “reigning junior Australian Open singles champion and the junior Wimbledon doubles champion” according to the Wall Street Journal. According to the US Tennis Association, she’s also got a weight problem.

Her coaches declined to pay her travel expenses to attend the Open and told her this summer that they wouldn’t finance any tournament appearances until she makes sufficient progress in one area: slimming down and getting into better shape.

Reminder: She’s 16. The Journal notes Lindsay Davenport spent some time at the top of the rankings while 175 pounds. And Serena Williams has battled weight issues and is easily the best women’s player of her generation. [WSJ via Greg]
