Saturday’s Notre Dame vs. Michigan, despite two concurrent meetings between Top 15 teams, drew 6.4 million viewers. This was up 68 percent of the Michigan State game in that slot last season. It drew twice as many viewers as last year’s USC game. It was NBC’s most-watched Notre Dame game since 7 million viewers saw them play, you guessed it, Michigan in 2010.

This game won’t be missed, of course, since Notre Dame vs. Michigan isn’t a real rivalry. Sure, the game has cultural resonance for fan bases with genuine acrimony, it draws tremendous national interest and has produced a number of great games over the past few decades, but where is the grainy leather helmet footage?

Games with Duke, Maryland, Wake Forest and UVA undoubtedly will set record ratings, on ESPNU.
