Max Scherzer Injured During Detroit Tigers Celebration, Won't Pitch Tonight

The Detroit Tigers clinched a postseason berth late Monday night, and although the celebration wasn’t the raucous party the Washington Nationals had – the Tigers have been there before – it was just wild enough for someone to get injured. Pitcher Max Scherzer apparently got stepped on, and his ankle is busted up enough that he won’t start the season finale tonight. Jim Leyland told the media:

“This is a slightly twisted ankle. It doesn’t appear to be serious-serious. But it is obviously serious enough that he won’t pitch tomorrow … It was on the field during the celebration when people were jumping on the pile,” Leyland said. “Somehow somebody stepped on his ankle.”

Scherzer has had a very good season – 16-7, 2nd in the AL in Ks with 228, and top 20 in the AL in ERA and WHIP – but he’s recovering from a bum shoulder and now has the ankle to deal with. Detroit probably has the best postseason rotation in the AL with Scherzer. [Freep]
