Jovan Belcher shot Kasandra Perkins in a fit of rage just before 8 a.m., yelling “You can’t talk to me like that”, moments before gunshots rang out. Moments later, according to new details contained in the police report and reported by the Kansas City Star, he was leaning over her, saying how sorry he was, and kissing her on the forehead. His mother had been staying with the couple, and rushed in from the kitchen and witnessed the aftermath. He then apologized to his mother, kissed his young daughter, and fled the scene to drive to Arrowhead Stadium, where he arrived five minutes later.
According to the Kansas City Star, Belcher and Perkins had been receiving counseling for their relationship, with the team’s knowledge. When he arrived and jumped out of the car with a gun pointed at his head, he told Scott Pioli, “I did it. I killed her.”
Pioli, Romeo Crennel and assistant coach Gary Gibbs tried to convince him that life was not over. He asked that Pioli and owner Clark Hunt take care of his young daughter, and then, with the sound of police sirens approaching him, went around behind his vehicle, knelt down, made the sign of the cross, and shot himself in the head.
The couple had fought after both being out the night before. While it is unclear what happened in the interim, police found Belcher sleeping in his Bentley on the side of Armour Road, woke him, and determined he was able to drive. That was about 50 minutes before he shot Kasandra Perkins.
[Update: this NY Post story says the police awoke him from his vehicle around 2:30 a.m., that he was in his vehicle outside of the apartment of another woman, and went inside for four hours. He returned home around 6:45.]
Perkins was a cousin of Jamaal Charles’ wife. Charles released a statement yesterday:
Our family has suffered a personal tragic loss.… As this is a very tough time for our family, I ask that we are respected as we grieve. Kassandra was not only family, but a friend and a loving mother. As my actual family and my Kansas City Chiefs family have been altered forever, we ask that you keep us and most importantly their child in prayer. Thank you all for your continued support.
