Illinois stunned No. 1 Indiana with a 13-2 run to close the game, capped by this Tyler Griffey layup at the buzzer to pull off the upset in Champaign, 74-72. Illinois was inbounding the ball with :00.9 left, and it appeared the game was headed to overtime. But Indiana bricked defensively – if you want to blame Cody Zeller, fine – and Griffey cut to the hoop for the easy game-winner.
If you’re thinking this sparks the Illini on some kind of late-season run to grab an NCAA bid, great, but they’ve got a mountain to climb at just 3-7 in the Big Ten, and they still have to visit Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio State. It seems highly unlikely that they’ll finish .500 in the league. A run to the Big Ten tournament championship game will probably be necessary.
For a sport whose regular season is supposedly in “shambles,” it sure has been in incredible few weeks.
