Tim Pernetti Claims "First Instincts" Were to Fire Mike Rice, But Rutgers Legal Process Stopped Him

Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti released his letter of resignation, after being let go by the university in the wake of the Mike Rice scandal. In the letter he claims his “first instincts” were to fire Rice immediately, but the school’s bureaucratic legal process prevented him from doing so.

As you know, my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice’s behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel. Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I have admitted my role in, and regret for, that decision, and wish that I had the opportunity to go back and override it for the sake of everyone involved.

His story changed, but so did his calculus now that he’s no longer employed. Next up: President Robert Barchi. Hey, at least “people are talking about Rutgers athletics.”
