Jon Jones will defend his light heavyweight championship at UFC 159 later this month. To promote the fight, the UFC has produced the above ad which uses a cover version of Queen’s stadium rock anthem, We Will Rock You. It is awful. I’m not alone in thinking that it sounds like a bastardized remix of We Will Rock You and Warrant’s Cherry Pie. Well, it turns out it actually is Warrant…

But wait, there is more. Warrant covered the song for the movie Gladiator. No, not the classic Russell Crowe movie from 2000. Warrant covered the song for the 1992 movie of the same name starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., James Marshall, Brian Dennehy, and Robert Loggia. That Gladiator is about underground illegal boxing and oh wait what’s that? Cuba Gooding Jr.’s character’s name is Abraham Lincoln Haines? OK then.

Of course the words “human cockfighting” are in the trailer. Everything about this ad is awful and amazing. Why would the UFC go for Warrant’s cover of We Will Rock you instead of getting Queens’ version? Because this is the same company that continues to bombard fans with Stemm’s “Face the Pain” instead of paying for the rights to Baba O’Riley so they can show their incredible in-arena highlight package at the start of broadcasts.
