Detroit Tigers pitcher Aníbal Sánchez set a franchise record Friday night with 17 strikeouts in a 10-0 blowout of the Atlanta Braves, a team some believe the Tigers will face again in the World Series. Sánchez, who threw only 121 pitches, is the second pitcher in the live-ball era to strike out 17 batters in eight innings or less. In 1992, Randy Johnson struck out 18 batters in eight frames but threw 160 pitches. The record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game is 20, a mark shared by Kerry Wood and Roger Clemens.
