PSG has become the exemplar of high-fashion football under Qatari ownership. They signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Beckham. They have started winning things. Long a soccer dead zone, Paris has invited them in from the Banlieue. Today, though, the club’s uncouth past came roaring back.
Players were at their Ligue Un title ceremony at the Trocadero for a matter of minutes before fans and riot police clashed. According to The Local, what are presumed to be the club’s infamous ultra fans threw projectiles at police who were reinforcing security around the podium. Police responded with tear gas. According to AFP, there were 21 arrests and 16 policemen were injured.
The club’s party cruise on a Seine riverboat was cancelled.
