Tonight in Chicago, the Blackhawks host the Bruins in Game 1 of the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals. It’s the first Original Six finals since 1979, when the Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers in five games.
Thanks to the magic of YouTube (and the NHL Network) footage exists of the decisive game, although the game apparently wasn’t available to most American television viewers, according to SI’s Richard Deitsch.
Does the 1979 Cup final fall under the auspices of “old time hockey?” The footage is only 34 years old, but it almost looks like an entirely different sport. Chances are you’re not going to sit and watch 90 minutes of a hockey game from the 1970s, but do try to fast forward and jump around, if only to catch some most excellent hairdos on display before helmets became mandatory.
